Not only is the APP store review process time consuming (10 days first first app review, 7 days for a simple bugfix update), and the rules harsh compared to the local publications laws in germany, it definitely needs more filtering on the quantity side: dozens of travel APPs flooding a category only by changing the country name – no doubt about its famous 100 bazillions APPs.
This is especially annoying for the german or probably any local market: small APPs with barely any valuable content are copied over to the german store with absolutely no localization and their hit ranking pushed by the international references (most probably) but they are just unusable for local users: look for paint or simple logic games in the kids category of the german store and you’ll soon get confronted with english instructions, labels and names.
From a technical point of view, this is ridiculous easy to be built into the review process: compare the german.lproj resouces with the english.lproj files, create a “fuzzy measure” how close they are and reject the localized version if it’s too close to the english version. Of course there will be trolls fooling around it but Apple needs to start somewhere and clean all other already published APPs too.
